Universidad del Mar

Universidad del Mar belongs to the Oaxacan University System (SUNEO) along with seven more universities throughout the beautiful state of Oaxaca.

Universidad del Mar (UMAR) opened its doors in August 1992 and is the second research university within the SUNEO. The university is composed on three regional campi in Huatulco, Puerto Ángel and Puerto Escondido. Each campus has been designed to fulfill different needs along the Oaxacan coast. Huatulco focuses in Social Sciences, Puerto Ángel in Marine Sciences and Puerto Escondido in Biological and Informatics Sciences.

UMAR at Puerto Escondido offers Biology, Forestry, Informatics and Zootechny majors for undergraduates since 2001.  We are now offering a new master degree in tropical resources.

Although other universities  may teach paleontology within the biology curriculum, UMAR is the only university within the SUNEO where paleontological research is carried out.

Oaxaca has a large amount of fossil localities that range from Paleozoic to Cenozoic in age. Due to its geographic location in southern Mexico, a comprehensive knowledge of its fossils is needed to asses evolutionary relationships of invertebrates and vertebrates in the southernmost region of North America. Similarly, reassessment of biogeographical relationships between North American and South American taxa is of most importance.  Paleontology researchers are part of the Geosciences Academic Group at UMAR.  Paleontologists research interests are outlined below.

Research Interests

  • Invertebrate paleobiology and science communication
  • Paleobiology of Cenozoic mammals
